ABSTRACT

How teachers creatively adopted and adapted to the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak is at the heart of the findings presented in this chapter. With the support of the Avenue-LearnIT2teach project, English Second Language (ESL) teachers in Canada enabled the rapid response of many Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs to site closures, resulting in an unprecedented uptake of online learning (OL) in a matter of weeks. The project rapidly changed course to support LINC teachers to adopt blended learning (BL) courseware and adapt teaching practices to the new OL reality. This chapter discusses the impact of the project's efforts to meet the surge in demand in teacher training and learner courseware for these online immigrant settlement and language learning programs. The project's rapid response to onsite LINC program closures during the COVID-19 crisis is reviewed. As a result of the disruptions to in-person program delivery, the focus of the project has shifted from blended learning (BL) to online learning (OL) by adapting its formal and informal professional development (PD) offerings. Findings with respect to the surge in demand for teacher training, course development, and mentoring are presented. Feedback from teachers on the "front lines" further illustrates teachers' OL uptake. The chapter also addresses the impact of formal and informal PD provided by a committed team of mentors as well as the importance of teacher presence in online program delivery. Implications and recommendations with respect to rapid responses in situations of crises conclude the chapter. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic revealed a complex health problem for people and national health systems. Faced with the initial ignorance of the behavior of the SARS-COV-2 virus in populations, people turned to relief and alternative medicines. In Ecuador, the use of traditional or western medicine and the systematic approach of people to conventional medicine are evident realities. Our work aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding Covid-19 and the use of formal and traditional medicine to treat the disease or contagion. An open, personal and confidential survey was carried out, with 158 questions on general data, ethnicity, health status, covid-19 tests, use of self-medication, use of medicinal plants or other chemical products, and use of antibiotics or antiparasitics, among other data. In the control of the patients, six months after finishing the survey, they were asked about the acceptance of the vaccine and the decision to be vaccinated or not. The results in 3,000 persons (50% female and 50% male) show frequent use of alternative or traditional medicine, even in health personnel or university studies. The study's conclusions reflect that people choose any of the therapies they have access to and even mix traditional treatments with traditional ones that are unproven or toxic. © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

This study demonstrates how significantly the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Bangladesh's formal education system. Despite the fact that Bangladesh introduced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in educational practices before the pandemic, effective ICT deployment could not be integrated at all levels. Even though online classes and other print- and electronic media-based approaches evolved into the "new normal" in an effort to address the difficulties brought on by the pandemic, both teachers and students have faced and continue to encounter many challenges. A convergent parallel mixed method design was followed for this study. Data were collected from 205 Bangladeshi students and 50 Bangladeshi teachers through semi-structured questionnaires. In addition, 11 parent interviews and 12 Key Informant Interviews were conducted. According to the findings, the lack of proper training for teachers, poor socio-economic conditions, lack of internet availability and speed, the shortage of ICT equipment, students not being technologically exposed, and the disruption of electricity are major issues hindering the fruitful implementation of online education. Creating an ICT framework, providing subsidised internet for students and instructors for instructive purposes, promoting alternative means to carry on formal education, dedicating instruction hours in TV and radio channels, ensuring proper IT infrastructure and tools, and taking initiatives to promote the learning management system can play a significant role in creating the ideal environment to promote online education. In summary, this study suggests a holistic framework to continue formal teaching-learning in different levels of education to achieve sustainable development goals (SDG) without any disruption in emergency contexts such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

One of the most important goals of modern medicine is prevention against pandemic and civilization diseases. For such tasks, advanced IT infrastructures and intelligent AI systems are used, which allow supporting patients' diagnosis and treatment. In our research, we also try to define efficient tools for coronavirus classification, especially using mathematical linguistic methods. This paper presents the ways of application of linguistics techniques in supporting effective management of medical data obtained during coronavirus treatments, and possibilities of application of such methods in classification of different variants of the coronaviruses detected for particular patients. Currently, several types of coronavirus are distinguished, which are characterized by differences in their RNA structure, which in turn causes an increase in the rate of mutation and infection with these viruses.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundAfrica, like other parts of the world, continuously strives to deliver quality health professions education. These efforts are influenced to a larger extent by the socio-economic and cultural context of the region, but also by what happens globally. The global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 necessitated the implementation of emergency remote teaching to continue delivering on the mandate of educating future health professionals. The purpose of this research was to describe the response of selected health professions education institutions in Southern Africa to the impact of COVID-19 and their preparedness for remote learning and teaching.MethodsA case study design was applied using an adapted ADKAR model as a conceptual framework for data interpretation. The purposively selected study population consisted of educators, students, and administrators in undergraduate medical and nursing programmes from six institutions in five countries.ResultsA total of 1307 respondents provided data for the study. Many of the institutions were caught off-guard when most educators and almost all students were required to leave their universities and go home. Stakeholders immediately became aware of the need to adopt online approaches as an emergency measure. In all programmes, educators, students, and administrators agreed that change was desired, and students realised that they had to take charge of their own learning independently. Overall educators reported confidence in the ability to use of standard Microsoft software, while knowledge of learning management systems proved more challenging for both educators and students. Many stakeholders, especially students and administrators, reported uncertainty about their ability to function in the new reality. Conducive family dynamics, a quiet space to study, good connectivity, a reliable electricity supply and appropriate devices were reported to reinforce learning and teaching.ConclusionsThe findings highlight the need for higher education institutions to prepare for alternative modes to face-to-face learning and teaching approaches with the ultimate aim of transitioning to full online learning more expeditiously. This requires scaling up educational infrastructure, prioritising strategic directives driving continuous professional development of educators and fostering co-constructivist approaches towards student centered education.

ABSTRACT

Commencing a PhD is not always the easiest decision, especially amidst a global pandemic. Despite knowing this, commencing a PhD from home was a decision I chose to make when I was uncertain about my future after completing my Master's. Within this chapter, I discuss how learning the concept of cognitive hardiness proved to be useful to me during this journey. Cognitive hardiness comprises commitment, control, and challenge. I was also fortunate to have supportive supervisors and opportunities to engage in coaching, as well as formal and informal mentoring. In addition to discussing my experiences within this chapter, I also reached out to a colleague who is completing a Master's by Research to assess if there were any points of comparison in our experiences of commencing our studies from home. I hope the research and reflections from our experiences will help other early career researchers and academics develop a variety of coping mechanisms to maintain control, remain committed, and embrace challenges within the current environment, given the possibility that the world of academia has been changed forever. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2022.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The objective of this paper is to evaluate the use of informal payments and personal connections to gain preferential access to public health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and to propose effective policy measures for tackling this phenomenon. Methods: Using data from 25,744 patients in the European Union, six different scenarios are analyzed in relation to making informal payments and/or relying on personal connections to access public healthcare services. To evaluate the propensity to engage in informal practices in healthcare, probit regressions with sample selection and predicted probabilities are used. Robustness checks are also performed to test the reliability of the findings. Results: For each scenario, a statistically significant association is revealed between the propensity to make informal payments and/or rely on personal connections and the asymmetry between the formal rules and the patients' personal norms and trust in public authorities. Conclusion: To tackle informal practices in healthcare, policy measures are required to reduce the asymmetry between the formal rules and personal norms by raising trust in public authorities.

ABSTRACT

The report looks at the benefits and possible solutions to the problems posed by the global epidemic crisis through an online tool developed to provide a quality programme for members of the Organization of Bulgarian Scouts. Digital technologies are an integral part of our daily lives, evolving at a very rapid pace. The advancement of information technology allows its integration and making it a tool to deal with the consequences of the COVID crisis, which affected all youth organizations and prevented the normal implementation of planned activities.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to report empirical research on gender managerial obstacles in UAE private organizations. It identifies the barriers that limit opportunities for gender equality promotion in managerial level positions.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data were gathered from 384 female managers operating in UAE organizations using Survey Monkey and ANOVA for statistical analysis. Two variables (years of experience and industry) were used to compare the average means across the responses and the differences among the group.FindingsThe situation of gender equality in UAE management currently shows a positive trend. The females who participated in the survey have considerable work experience and jobs in a vital economic sector of the UAE industry. The earlier cultural stereotypes that worked against the interests of women in the UAE society are no longer relevant except for informal barriers and the level of cooperation among female leaders. We found differences among industry, service and transportation sectors in which gender managerial level in a private industry is dependent upon the number of years of experience for female managers.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation of the study is the online survey was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic during the lockdown period in the spring of 2020, which led to a low number of participants responding to the questionnaire. Additionally, the survey did not include a nationality question to distinguish Emiratis from non-Emirati.Social implicationsThis study indicates a need to coordinate UAE female leaders' actions to protect their rights, develop formal and informal mechanisms of gender inequality realization in business and promote professional skills, orientation on social networks, and mentoring programs for female leaders. These initiatives improve the positions of female leaders.Originality/valueThe study of the UAE case adds to the existing literature on gender studies because the survey-based research in the UAE context contributes to the limited knowledge of Middle Eastern countries. The females' employment and their representation in managerial levels remain lower compared to males. Differences exist among the industry, service and transportation sectors.

ABSTRACT

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic that occurred in December 2019 and spread globally. Most of the current research is on how to apply deep learning to detect COVID-19, but little research has been done on the security of COVID-19 deep learning systems. Therefore, we test and verify the security of COVID-19 CT images deep learning system with adversarial attack. Firstly, we build a deep learning system for recognizing COVID-19 CT images. Secondly, adding imperceptible disturbance to CT images will lead to neural network classification errors. Finally, we discuss the application of formal methods and formal verification to deep learning systems. We hope to draw more attention from researchers to the application of formal methods and formal verification to artificial intelligence. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates how formal and informal caregiving disruptions-due to the U.K. government's non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) aimed at reducing transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus-may have affected the likelihood of psychological distress among older individuals. We model the association between disruption of formal and informal care and mental health of the elderly during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic using a recursive simultaneous - equation model for binary variables. Our findings reveal that public interventions, which are most essential for reducing the pandemic spread, influenced the provision of formal and informal care. The lack of adequate long-term care following the COVID-19 outbreak has also had negative repercussions on the psychological well-being of these adults.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe study aims to establish that a humanistic model is a necessary context for efficient employer branding (EB) and to identify the characteristic features of a humanistic model in IKEA.Design/methodology/approachThis study included a review of the scientific literature and a narrative case study via semi-structured interviews with top management leaders and middle managers.FindingsThe research demonstrates that the effectiveness of EB depends on the implementation of a humanistic model and that IKEA uses a business paradigm that involves EB through a humanistic management model. In addition, the pandemic has enhanced prosocial management and revealed the need for this model in companies. Through the analysis of the humanistic model used by IKEA, the authors provide an example of how other organizations and business leaders can develop communities and society not based on profit maximization. However, further research is needed to contrast the quantitative information provided by the company itself and by external sources. What is offered in this article is the starting point for future studies on this topic.Originality/valueThis is one of the first studies on EB in the context of a humanistic model and the first to use IKEA as a paradigmatic example.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to identify the usage of ICT tools among social educators within their professional activity. Technology among social educators is currently a very up-to-date topic. This is a professional group with its own characteristics that are different from those of teachers or other professionals in formal education. A mixed sequential two-phase method was proposed for the study: both quantitative and qualitative. In the first phase, the EdSocEval_V2 questionnaire was applied to a sample of 504 social educators from 17 autonomous communities. In the second phase, four focus groups were formed. The results presented reduced and basic usage of ICT: in management and administrative tasks and for communication with conventional tools. The COVID-19 pandemic has likewise increased the need for the use of ICT in socio-educational interventions, although their use for intervention among these groups is still very scarce. Training in and raising awareness of ICT among professionals for social interventions are priorities, as is the construction of a referential framework for professional training. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

Fighting against misinformation and computational propaganda requires integrated efforts from various domains like law or education, but there is also a need for computational tools. I investigate here how reasoning in Description Logics (DLs) can detect inconsistencies between trusted knowledge and not trusted sources. The proposed method is exemplified on fake news for the new coronavirus. Indeed, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, many were quick to spread deceptive information. Since, the not-trusted information comes in natural language (e.g. "Covid-19 affects only the elderly”), the natural language text is automatically converted into DLs using the FRED tool. The resulted knowledge graph formalised in Description Logics is merged with the trusted ontologies on Covid-10. Reasoning in Description Logics is then performed with the Racer reasoner, which is responsable to detect inconsistencies within the ontology. When detecting inconsistencies, a "red flag” is raised to signal possible fake news. The reasoner can provide justifications for the detected inconsistency. This availability of justifications is the main advantage compared to approaches based on machine learning, since the system is able to explain its reasoning steps to a human agent. Hence, the approach is a step towards human-centric AI systems. The main challenge remains to improve the technology which automatically translates text into some formal representation. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we will try to follow a narrative trajectory that, through the first-person story of Marta as a volunteer educator, introduces some of the territorial educational experiences organized by local commons in the city of Naples. The nature of these spaces tries to put the needs of the common individual at the center and each educational reality narrated, each in its own way, tries to create community through dialogic actions with the people living in the neighborhood, engaging in the promotion of paths of mutual help, built from below starting by sharing practices of community support. In the story of educational experiences, experiences that have abruptly interrupted with the pandemic, we will let ourselves be supported by the theoretical frame of reference of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy, just as we will try to reflect, in terms of spaces as horizons of educationally sustainable possibilities, the post-pandemic situation.

ABSTRACT

Economic inequality qualifies as a structural characteristic leading to political action, albeit this relationship manifests differently across socioeconomic classes. COVID-19 pandemic has amplified existing economic inequalities in ways that increased social tensions and political unrest around the world. This research investigates the effect of COVID-19 personal impacts on the relationship between perceived economic inequality and individuals' political participation. An online survey was administered to an Italian representative sample of 1,446 people (51% women, mean age of 42.42 years, SD = 12.87). The questionnaire assessed the perceived economic inequality, the personal impacts of COVID-19 (i.e., on finance, mental health, and ability to procure resources), and individuals' involvement in political participation. Moderation analyses were conducted separately for different socioeconomic classes (i.e., lower, middle, and upper classes). Results showed that individuals who perceive greater economic inequality, while controlling for perceived wage gap, are more likely to take action, but only if they belong to the higher class. For lower-class individuals, perceiving greater inequality erodes political action. Interaction effects occurred mainly in the middle class and with COVID-19 impacts on resources procurement, which inhibits political action. Copyright © 2023 Vezzoli, Mari, Valtorta and Volpato.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study aims to assess the potential mediating effects of formal and informal networks in the relationship between government support and Ghanaian indigenous firms' degree of internationalisation.Design/methodology/approachThis study was a cross-sectional design, where the structured questionnaire was used in gathering data from 301 indigenous Ghanaian firms. The path estimation was conducted by running structural equation modelling in AMOS v.23.FindingsIt was concluded that government support had a significant positive effect on Ghanaian indigenous firms' degree of internationalisation. Formal network was found to partially mediate the relationship between government support and indigenous firms' degree of internationalisation. Finally, it was concluded that informal networks had no mediating effect.Research limitations/implicationsOne limitation is that the effect of the government support and network strategy was only explored on indigenous exporters, meaning that exporters which did not fall within the definition of indigenous firms were excluded from the study. Future studies could conduct a comparative study on the same variables, using indigenous and non-indigenous firms.Practical implicationsIt is recommended that Ghanaian exporters should participate in government training and workshop programmes focussing on building export business strategies and networking to improve export activities.Originality/valueThis study's unique contribution is its investigation of how networking portfolio, including formal and informal ties, helps explain the nexus between government support and the internationalisation of local firms in the developing market, such as Ghanaians.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic situation has forced students in higher education to use alternative learning routines due to reduced activities at universities and educational facilities. Especially music students needed to adapt their musical learning to this particular situation. Mostly affected by the lockdown was the musical practicing behavior, especially when practicing at the University of Music was not possible. In this study, music students in their second and third semesters were asked to provide information on their practicing situations during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown. They were required to fill in questionnaires about the practicing time and concepts of self-efficacy and self-regulation for musical learning. The data of 18 music students were collected. For the analysis, they were compared with the answers of 15 music students who were asked the same questions half a year earlier before the pandemic situation occurred. The results showed that the music students relocated mostly to their parents' homes for practicing during the lockdown. In the amount of practicing, the bachelor of music students practiced less during lockdown compared with before the lockdown. The mean self-efficacy for musical learning did not differ between before and during the lockdown. For the self-regulated musical learning, the music students showed significantly higher values in the subscale on reflecting and creating a framework for the progress of musical learning during the lockdown. The findings indicate that the music students developed certain self-regulated learning skills during the lockdown and managed to find suitable solutions in continuing with their musical learning without reservation.
